The Seattle P-I made an exceptional effort to provide coverage of the sanctions by traveling to Iraq with an international WPSR/IPPNW delegation in 1999 (P-I: 5/11/99). The P-I also provided leading coverage of the sanctions on the 10th anniversary of the Gulf War (P-I: 1/17/01) and published a ground-breaking op-ed (P-I: 6/21/01). The Seattle Times published an excellent editorial following a meeting with members of WPSR and AFSC (Times: 2/20/00) and has since established an editorial position strongly against the sanctions (Times: 10/1/00, 3/8/01, 5/14/01).

Please respond to and thank the editorial staffs for their coverage of the sanctions. They are helping to break mainstream media's silence on this issue. So long as the embargo remains, the situation calls for more of this kind of in-depth and compassionate reporting.

Letters to the Editor always help; even if not printed they have an impact on the paper and prepare the way for letters that will get printed. (Note: To have your letter considered for publication, both papers require that you include your full name, home address, and daytime and evening telephone number(s) for verification.)

The Seattle P-I's Reader Representative position was newly created to help the paper be more responsive to and learn from their readers. For more on what the reader rep does, click here. The P-I is openly appealing to readers for input. Let them know what you think!
