CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: TRUE STORIES ABOUT OR INTERVIEWS OF IRAQI PEOPLE FOR THE BOOK "VOICES FROM IRAQ"

THE BOOK "VOICES FROM IRAQ" aims to put a verbal "face" on the lives of children, women and men in Iraq. I am collecting articles, which may already have been published in print or on line, or that may be only entries in a personal Iraqi journal, just waiting to be polished and published. This call is going out to anyone who has traveled to Iraq as journalist, part of a peace team, medical worker or in another capacity, and who has a story to tell about the Iraqi people encountered.

DEADLINE FOR THE E-BOOK (TO BE PUT ON LINE WHEN I HAVE ENOUGH MATERIAL): AS SOON AS YOU CAN MANAGE IT.

DEADLINE FOR HARD COPY (AN EXPANSION OF THE E-BOOK): FEBRUARY 28TH, 2003.

GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSIONS:

1. Emphasis on stories that are individual and personal; details of appearances, sounds, smells, dialogue -- the ambience of Iraqi life. "I went, I saw, I heard, I felt...." "Fatima said, she looked, she did...." A few articles about the war and its consequences will be included, but not many. Once the reader "meets" the people, and "hears" about their circumstances, the politics will be obvious.

2. 1,000 to 2,000 words (3 to 7 double-spaced pages).

3. Please email or snailmail submissions, double-spaced, to gnicarthy@earthlink.net or 333, 16th Ave. Seattle, Washington, 98122.

4. I welcome stories from as broad a spectrum of society as possible, including the old, the homeless, the wealthy, or business people, soldiers who fought on the Highway of Death, clerics, Kurds and artists. I am open to suggestions.

5. Payment is uncertain, but it is my intention for contributors to be paid an honorarium for the hard copy edition.
